Conscious Parenting: What is It and Should YOU Be Practicing It?
Conscious Parenting: What is It and Should YOU Be Practicing It?
I don't know a harder job then being a
good parent. You can't determine what kind of child you will have, and they will
test you at times.
Even if they're a model kid, you still
have the challenge of setting a good example and figuring out the balance
between giving them too much freedom and not enough? How do we keep them safe, yet
still give them the opportunity to explore and seek adventure in life?
OK so what is compassionate parenting?
Unlike some parenting styles that teach the parents how to train their children
to behave or give them specific punishment techniques to help ‘fix’ the
problem, compassionate parenting is about formulating a more productive interaction
with your child. It looks at the parent’s mindset and how this determines their
ability to make better choices.
Dr. Tsabury Shefali, a clinical
psychologist is a leading expert in this field and the author of “Compassionate
Parenting”.[1]
The premise of this concept is that your
child is a unique individual, and we can learn from them. By ‘letting go’ of
our own baggage and becoming MORE in tune with ourselves, we can connect more authentically
with our own children.
Let me share an example.
So, you find Johnny drawing on the
walls.
Some parents may just react, pull the
crayons out of his hands, and start yelling at Johnny to go to his room. Some
may even hit him. That’s what my father said his family did when he was bad “give
him a few licks.”
In compassionate parenting, a parent
is taught to BREATHE first. Take several deep breaths and calmly remove
the crayons, while reflecting on his behavior. Then you have an open DISCUSSION
with Johnny, asking why he did this, especially if you had rules in place to
not draw on the walls.
YOU LISTEN INTENTLY with COMPASSION.
Johnny tells you he was at his friend
Mike's house yesterday, and they have a beautiful mural on their wall. Since it
was Mother's Day, and Father's Day is coming up, he just wanted to make a pretty
picture for you and mom.
You respond, “that's so sweet son, but
YOU NEED TO GET PERMISSION FIRST. Here's some paper to draw on and if you
really want to make a painting, let's see if we can get a canvas and maybe some
paint that you can draw on. Does that sound good?”
Sure does, thanks dad. “Whoa wait son.
What about disobeying the house rules? What do you think would be a good
punishment (or you tell them the punishment)?”
He responds, “how about I do extra
chores for the next week?” You respond, “make it two weeks.” “Yes Sir, Love you, Dad.” “Love you too, Son!”
The Benefits of Compassionate
Parenting:
1.Reduces anxiety and stress (since
you are promoting a MORE RELAXED state)
2.Helps forge a stronger parent-child bond
(because the child feels they are being heard)
3.Improves focus and long-term memory[2]
(as you are Fully PRESENT, by BEING More Mindful)
4.Reduces blood pressure and improves
sleep (since you are CALMER)
The downsides:
1.It takes time to develop these
skills
2.There’s no specific recipe for how
the parent responds
This parenting style relies on the
concept that a child needs to struggle at times to grow.
Grandmaster Steve teaches us this principle
in the Blackbelt Leadership Training Program. You will BE CHALLENGED, and YOU
WILL GROW on your way to becoming a Blackbelt. It will also BE one of the MOST
MEMORABLE Experiences of YOUR Life (because you will see what you are made
of)!
