Gut Health: What YOU Need to Know
Gut Health: What YOU Need to Know
Are you
living on antacids or laxatives, or feeling bloated or gassy? Do you suffer
from heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea?
These may be
signs of a sick gut, and the symptoms may be concerning for more serious
conditions. Please make sure to get evaluated by your health care provider.
The gut is a
long tube from the mouth to the anus. In an adult human it can measure 30 feet
long (the size of 2 giraffes). It takes about 6-8 hours for food to pass
through your stomach and small intestine and 36 hours for food to move through
your entire colon.[1]
How often
should I poop?
May vary
from three times a day to three times a week, but for the average person it is
once a day. The stool should be soft well-formed logs that are not hard to push
out.[2]
What your
gut does:
1.Breaks
down and absorbs nutrients
2.Seventy
percent of your immune system resides in the gut[3]
3.Involved
in energy production from the food and beverages consumed
4.Helps with
hormone balance
5.Eliminates
toxin & waste[4]
6.Supports mental
health and a strong immune system
7.Promotes skin
health
8. Also
known as the “second brain”
The Gut-Brain Connection[5]
The GI tract is considered
the 2nd brain because it relies on the same type of neurons and
neurotransmitters that are found in the brain and spinal cord.
For example, if you are
testing for your new belt, you may get nervous and feel like there are
“butterflies in your stomach”.
Latest research is showing
those suffering with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), anxiety, depression and
stress, should get their guts fully evaluated.
That’s why I like to order
the GI effects profile from Genova Diagnostics (gdx.net). It’s a comprehensive
stool analysis that looks directly at the microbiome (the diverse array of
bacteria and fungi that reside in our intestines) that are directly influenced
by an individual’s diet and lifestyle.
The microbiome also
affects our immune cells; that is why a healthy gut is critical to a strong
immune system. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
(DRINK, AND ABSORB)!
What YOU Can Do?
1.Get evaluated.
Even if you feel fine, testing can be used preventively, to make sure nothing
is brewing. You don’t always FEEL sick (more on that in the next blog).
2.Head to Krav,
activity is one of the best things you can do for your gut. It aids in good
blood flow!
3.Drink water
and eat MORE of a plant-based diet (high in fiber).
4.As Grandmaster
Steve poignantly wrote in his blog yesterday, becoming part of the blackbelt
leadership program helps build good leaders. You need YOUR health to do this.
Furthermore, as YOU Master YOUR health, YOU No Longer become its servant!
