Helpful Tips to Treat Allergies Naturally
Do you suffer with allergies? Millions of people do
and in Florida it can occur all year round.[1]
Allergies are hypersensitive immune reactions.[2] In other words, allergies
are a result of the immune system overreacting to a harmless substance
in the environment like pollen. This can lead to an inflammatory response in
the body (swelling, pain, redness, feeling hot and loss of function).[3]
Reduce triggers if possible. Allergy testing can help determine
some specific allergens.
Check vitamin D levels. Low vitamin D has been
associated with asthma and allergic diseases (i.e., allergic rhinitis and
wheezing) especially in children.[4]
As a family medicine doctor, I can see all age groups,
and often order vitamin D and allergy testing for my patients.
Typical symptoms of allergies are itchy, watery eyes, sneezing
and an itchy rash.
Sometimes, allergies can lead to a sinus infection and
a fever due to the bacteria or viruses present.[5]
Bummer, I know. Martika (GM Steve’s mom) asked me for
some natural remedies.
Here’s my go to suggestions (if
not allergic):
1.Natural anti-inflammatory agents:
a.Turmeric[6]
b.Fish oil (can decrease
the dryness of the lining of the respiratory tract and retain moisture in the
nasal passages)[7]
c.Stinging Nettles from
the plant urtica dioica (potent anti-inflammatory agent)[8]
d.Quercetin[9]
e.N-acetylcysteine (NAC,
thins mucous, improves lung function)[10] [11]
f. Vitamin C (Emergen C
or from whole fruit) is a potent antioxidant[12]
2. Raw local honey and Olbas cough drops are great for
that nagging cough or postnasal drip or congestion. If you need something stronger,
I use Buckley’s cough syrup (>12 years old) which contains menthol &
camphor.
3.Essential oils (use in a diffuser or mix with
coconut oil and apply to feet): Breathe and Onguard from Doterra (help open the
airways and can act as a natural decongestant)
4.Drink adequate amounts of water (thins the mucous)
5.Moisturize inside the nostrils (I use Burt’s Bees
ointment or lucas papaw ointment). If comfortable, can use nasal irrigation
with hypertonic saline. Use boiled, sterile or filtered water.[13]
6.Adequate rest helps strengthen the immune system. This
can be difficult with allergies, so I suggest sleeping a little more upright and
using a humidifier right by your nose and mouth (helps moisturize those areas
which can thin the mucous and reduce congestion).
7.Hepa filter and ionizer to clean out the air. You
can have for your home, office, vehicle, and there are wearable or portable
ionizers. I also like using indoor plants like pathos and peace lilies, which filter
out toxins from the air, and keep your indoor environment free from allergens. These
plants are low in pollen counts.[14]
8.Keep shoes outside. This can be a nidus for bringing
in allergens.
9.Hypoallergenic bedding which distances a person
allergic to dust mites.[15]
10.Uplifted Mindset. What you think about is where you
go. We know a happier mind is kind! You deserve to focus on Wellness, so
YOU GO THERE! Health is Wealth. Smile & Laugh A LOT to feel better (it
helps).[16] [17] Check out my silly videos on YouTube. 😊
