Air Fresheners: Are they SAFE?
Air Fresheners: Are they SAFE?
Did you know the scent
within many perfumes and colognes along with household cleaning products and plug-ins
(e.g. Febreze, Lysol, Clorox Bleach, Dawn, Tide, Irish Spring, Fabuloso) have artificial fragrances or perfumes (also
spelled parfumes) in their ingredients which contain many harmful chemicals.
According to the Environmental Working
Group (EWG.org), many of the chemicals in these synthetic fragrances contain
phthalates, which can: disrupt hormones; worsen asthma and allergies; lead to headaches, fatigue, or weight
gain (as these chemicals get stored in the fat); weaken the immune system; and
even possibly cause cancer.
What YOU CAN DO
Use natural products like Seventh Generation (SeventhGeneration.com) for laundry
and cleaning products, Ecos (ecos.com) for air freshener, cleaning, or laundry,
Dr. Squatch (drsquatch.com) for natural cologne, deodorant, face wash, lotion,
and hair products, or Shea Moisture (sheamoisture.com) for soap, and hair
products. These brands contain more
natural ingredients and don’t contain many harmful chemicals.
Laundry Hack: When doing laundry, add ½ cup distilled white vinegar in
the fabric softener area. This acts as a natural fabric softener cleaner,
deodorizing, and removing pet hair. Don’t worry, clothes won’t smell like
vinegar. They smell CLEAN!
These ecofriendly products can smell
nice and be just as effective at eliminating odors, killing germs, and cleaning
your body, clothing, dishes, floors, toilets, and countertops, among other
things.
Consider using the app YUKA , Think Dirty and check EWG.org which can help you get
clear information on the health impact of the products you consume.
