Is Sitting Too Long Killing You?

Do you sit for work?

Studies show irrespective of whether you exercise or not if you sit for prolonged periods (greater than three hours) that's an independent risk factor for early death.[1]

The Harm (of sitting too long)

1. Ninety percent of the pressure is directed to your low back (hence the reason many people get low back pain when they sit for too long)
2. Metabolism is slowed by 90% after sitting for 30 minutes or longer. This translates to a 9-pound weight loss in a year merely by standing up more (3 hours/day).
3. Worsening cholesterol and blood sugar
4. Increase risk of early death (37% increased risk in women and 17% increased risk in men)

Why is this?

When you sit, the muscles in your lower body are turned off. This causes calorie burning to plummet. Remember our ancestors were hunters and gatherers. As such, our bodies are made to move, except when we are sleeping or resting.

We weren't meant to sit for most of the day.

Even if you exercise one hour per day this does not offset being in a chair for too long
. Research shows sitting is the new smoking, as it kills more people than HIV.

The Simple Solution: Stand More

a.Get a standing desk (The prices have come down. Many offices have   them. They may even be covered with a doctor’s note).
b.Practice the 20:20 rule. Every 20 minutes GET UP for 20 seconds (or every hour rise for 1 minute). Can do this while working, watching TV, doing your homework, playing video games, etc.

c.Take phone calls standing up or conduct a meeting or conference on your feet.

Barbara (a patient of mine) told me when she stands more (and stretches), she feels better.

DYK

Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and Leonardo Da Vinci primarily stood while working and lived into their 90’s.

There is a vehicle where you can drive while standing up? (My main concern with that is safety).
