One Important Tip to Improve YOUR Brain Health

One Important Tip to Improve YOUR Brain Health

About the Brain

It is the most important real estate in your body! It controls everything, from what we do, to how we think and how we feel. It comprises about 2% of the body’s weight but uses 20% of its energy.[1] It’s the consistency of soft butter and has over 80 billion neurons (that’s right 80,000,000, 000 nerve cells) with each of these cells having thousands of connections with each other.

On average we can have over 6,000 thoughts a day and process certain types of information in as little as 13 milliseconds.[2] Outstanding!

That’s why we need to keep our brains healthy and strong.

Tip #1

Size Matters- Learn what shrinks Your Brain and what helps it GROW. Just like many things in life, you don’t want a puny brain. The nice part is you are NOT limited by your genes. You can influence them with a good lifestyle.[3]

It’s not too late either. Some studies show you can continue to grow the brain, even into your 90’s.[4]

Thank G-d because I have a terrible family history (including heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease). When I was young, I thought I was doomed.

My mother died at 40 of a brain aneurysm due to uncontrolled high blood pressure. The meds made her drowsy, so she didn’t take them. She also ate a lot of sugar.

Once I reviewed the medical literature and saw how a healthy lifestyle can boost longevity, increase vitality, and sharpen the mind, I was all in and changed my ways.

Unbeknownst, to some folks, I haven’t always been a health nut. I used to forget to eat, not drink much water, and eat mainly 1 food group, while stressing out a lot.

What Helps the Brain Grow

1.Brain Games (complete the challenge below)

2.Learning something new every day (i.e., a new move or student creed in Krav, a new dance or language, or how to play an instrument, or learn how something works). 😊

3.Getting adequate sleep (The National Sleep Foundation recommends healthy adults get 7-9 hours of sleep per night).[5]

4.Good nutrition (see my blog)

5.Staying active with cardio and strength training per the AHA guidelines.[6]  Get to Krav at least twice a week, stretch daily while weight training at least 2-3x per week. Consistent movement increases blood flow to the brain.

6.Adequate hydration (drink water, at least half your body weight in ounces)[7] The brain is 75% water[8] and blood is 90% water.[9]

What shrinks the Brain

1.Drugs (even some prescription meds i.e., blood pressure meds, anti-psychotics)[10][11]

* This doesn’t mean stop the prescription medications but see if there are other healthier alternatives and better lifestyle modifications that you can adopt.

Feel free to speak to Dr. Gold if you have any questions about this.

a.Tobacco (Don’t smoke or chew tobacco. Tobacco thins the outer layer of the brain called the cerebral cortex. It also damages your DNA, increasing your risk for cancer and ages you rapidly).

The best thing to do is never start, but if you use tobacco already, it’s best to quit as soon as possible, to reverse its damaging effects[12]. I know it’s challenging, but you can do it.

Get professional help if you need it. My patients have been successful with hypnosis and NLP. Think of the STRONG WHY (for why you want to quit) i.e., to see my kids grow up!

              b. Alcohol can shrink your brain and increase your risk for cancer. Believe it or not, alcohol is considered a toxin[13]. Drink sparingly - even 1 drink a day has been shown to shrink the brain.[14]

              c. Illicit drugs (damage the brain, except CBD the non-euphoric compound of cannabis has shown benefit for the brain)[15]

2.Chronic stress, anxiety and depression can harm the brain.[16] Simple mind body techniques can remedy this, like deep breathing, practicing gratitude, laughing, smiling, and doing some yoga.

3.Junk food including sugar, fried fatty foods, conventional red meat, white bread and rice, diet soda and drinks with artificial sweeteners, ahi tuna and swordfish (because of the high mercury content), and full fat cheeses and trans fats found in margarine and many packaged foods, injures the brain, by causing inflammation.

4.Caffeine can help with energy metabolism and focus, however it can also cause “cerebral hypoperfusion”, meaning decreased blood flow to the brain.[17]

5.Brain Injury - Have you suffered from major trauma to your head? Some NFL football players are donning on new head gear. David Amen, MD a prominent psychiatrist and expert in brain health believes kids should not engage in tackle football or any major sports that involves head butting. Be careful and wear protective equipment.

*Consider getting a brain SPECT (an imaging test) to look at your brain and check how it functions.

In Summary: What’s good for your heart is good for your brain. Take care of YOUR Mind, so you can Master YOUR LIFE!

Find the five-digit number in which the first digit is two more than the second, the second is two more than the third, the third is double the fourth, and the fifth is half the fourth. The sum of all the digits is 21.
